The JERICHO DIAMOND MINE was the first operational mine in Nunavut and represented a significant economic opportunity for the region. Located on both Crown and Inuit land, the mine is near Contwoyto Lake, about 350km southwest of Cambridge Bay.
The project began operations in early 2006 and created 160 jobs in the region. Unfortunately the mine was transitioned to a care and maintenance operation in late 2007 due to financial difficulties and remains so to this date. There is some hope a new ownership group may resume operations under different economic conditions. There remains a bond held by KIA for the final reclamation of the site should the mine be closed permanently.
