KIA Scholarship
Kitikmeot Inuit Association (KIA) supports and rewards Kitikmeot beneficiaries who are seeking to improve their higher level of education and who want to increase their skills in the technical trades or other professions.
Scholarships are intended to provide financial assistance to Kitikmeot beneficiaries who are enrolled in a recognized university, college or technical school, which will lead to a successful completion of post-secondary certificate, diploma or a degree program.
Scholarships
Students are required to submit a scholarship application along with a letter of acceptance from an acceptable University, College or technical school.
Criteria for the Aituuti Katimayiit Allocation Committee when evaluating applications for KIA Scholarship:
- The student must be enrolled full-time in a recognized university, college or technical school leading to the successful completion of a certificate, diploma or degree program.
- Persons receiving industrial and construction trades training are offered on a pro-rated basis for the in-class portion of their training in cases where classroom training is equal to or exceeds 8 weeks.
- Students are required to maintain a passing grade point average.
- Scholarship Award is limited to four consecutive years per individual course of study unless approved by Aituuti Katimayiit.
- The ability of a student to be awarded a future scholarship may be affected if they received scholarship funding but fail to complete the course of study for which the funding has been awarded.
- Students being paid salaries or wages by their employers while advancing their education are not eligible for a KIA Scholarship.
KIA Scholarship Amount
There are three scholarship amount categories:
- Students studying in their home town (Max: $1,500.00)
- Students studying outside their home community. ($2,000.00)
- Post-Graduate Studies -Students who have successfully completed 4 years of an undergraduate degree or in an advanced professional program (ex: Medical Doctor, Dentistry, MBA, LLB) (Max: $5,000.00)
Students are required to sign a Scholarship Agreement acknowledging receipt of the scholarship. First payment will be made at 50% at the signing of the scholarship agreement and the final 50% payment will be made when they maintain a passing grade point and submit an official transcript.
Scholarships are limited to four consecutive years per a student’s course of study.
Recipients of KIA scholarships who fail to complete their studies will not be allowed to apply for another scholarship for a duration of two years unless they make efforts to repay KIA for scholarship funds.
Application Process
Applications for KIA Scholarships are to be limited to a single intake period between July 1st and August 31st of each calendar year. Providing that the necessary documents accompany the applications (ex: application, letter of acceptance, void cheque. 2nd scholarship payment: official transcripts). To be eligible for second payment, students must submit transcripts within six (6) months from the completion of their studies.
