When To Apply
** TERRITORIAL / PROVINCIAL STUDENT AID **
Students must apply to government funding programs such as ALTS, FANS. NWT SFA, BC Student Aid, OSAP, AB Student Aid, etc. before they can be considered under the KIA Student Funding programs. Even if you know you will be denied funding through these programs you must still apply and submit proof of your approval/denial.
It is important that you do not miss the deadline for government funding programs as the KIA program budgets may not have enough funds to support all applicants.
Once students have applied to FANS, ALTS, SFA, AB Student Aid, etc. they may submit an application to the KIA for eligible ‘top-ups’ through KIA funding programs.
Students who are co-sponsored by the KIA and another organization will not receive funding for duplicate benefits. For example, if travel is provided through government funding for flights to and from school, the student will not also receive flights from the KIA.
Once you are accepted into a program, and have applied to your Territorial or Provincial funding agency, you can apply to the KIA Student Funding Program.
After you submit your completed application package, a committee will meet to review it. Application reviews take approximately 7-21 business days once all documents have been received. Apply early to allow enough time for processing.
Part-Time Students
Part-time students may be eligible for assistance with tuition, books and supplies, and prorated childcare costs.
Decision-Making Support
If you would like support or advice in selecting the educational institution(s) that would best suit you, we encourage you to contact our staff BEFORE you apply. We can provide information about the potential funding you might be eligible to receive through various funders, and the cost of living associated with the locations you are considering. This information can be valuable in making a final decision about which educational institution(s) to apply to.
These programs have a limited budget, and meeting the program eligibility does not guarantee funding. The actual amount of funding students will receive will be based on the funds that are available when the application is reviewed.
