FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 27, 2025- Cambridge Bay, NU: James Eetoolook who has been the Acting President of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association (KIA) has been appointed President of the KIA based on a resolution passed by the KIA Board of Directors at a recent Board Meeting (motion number BD49/25).
Eetoolook assumed the role of Acting President when the late Robert (Bobby) Greenley was forced to take a leave of absence from the position of KIA President in March due to health concerns. Sadly, Greenley passed on September 5, 2025.
“I am pleased that my fellow KIA Board Members trust me to assume this important position,” said Eetoolook. “However, I am still saddened by Bobby’s passing personally and professionally.”
Eetoolook will serve as KIA President until an election for that position is held in December 2026.
“I am committed to continuing the great work that Bobby started while he was President,” added Eetoolook. “I will ensure that Bobby’s unwavering commitment to the Kitikmeot and all those that call it home will continue. This is the best way I know to honor his memory and ensure that his legacy continues to be recognized to the end of his elected term and beyond.”
KIA by-law 5.10 states: ”Vacancies on the Board, however caused, shall be filled by the Directors from among the qualified Members of the Association, but in any instance where the term of office remaining as a result of vacancy exceeds two (2) years, the Board shall call a by-election in order to fill the position for the balance of the term.”
Robert (Bobby) Greenley was originally elected in December 2022 and served as KIA President until March 2025, therefore leaving less than two years remaining in his term of office. Eetoolook will now complete the four-year term that Greenley was elected to through to December 2026, moving from the role of Acting President to the position of KIA President.
