            Who We Are

The Kitikmeot Inuit Association (KIA) is a Designated Inuit Organization (DIO) under the Nunavut Agreement. The KIA manages the lands in trust for Kitikmeot Inuit, supporting traditional and cultural values and providing economic and social benefits to Kitikmeot Inuit. A not-for-profit designated Inuit organization with community-elected leadership, the KIA represents the Inuit people of the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut.

            Vision

Our vision is to protect the social, cultural, political, and environmental well-being of Kitikmeot Inuit while providing new opportunities for the Kitikmeot Region to thrive.

            Mandate

We manage the lands and resources that support traditional and cultural values, providing economic and social benefits to the Kitikmeot Inuit. Our mandate is for the Kitikmeot Inuit to have a strong sense of pride and identity, pursue higher education, and speak and write our Inuit language.

            Our History

Established in 1976 when the Nunavut Agreement was given Royal Assent, the Kitikmeot Inuit Association is an incorporated society designated as an Inuit Birthright Organization. The Kitikmeot Inuit Association is one of the three Regional Inuit Associations, along with the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, and the Kivalliq Inuit Association that advocate for regional interests in Nunavut.

KIA has a democratically elected board and represents all Inuit beneficiaries of the Kitikmeot Region. The communities of the region include Cambridge Bay, Kugluktuk, Gjoa Haven, Kugaaruk, and Taloyoak. As of 2020, there were over 6500 Kitikmeot Inuit members, of which 5000 are of voting age.

            President’s Message

An Open Letter from James Eetoolook, President of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association to the Hamlet of Arviat
Re: Being Selected to Host the Main Campus of Inuit Nunangat University

February 17, 2026: On behalf of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association (KIA) I would like to offer my congratulations to the Hamlet Arviat for being selected to be the home of the main campus of Inuit Nunangat University. Thank you to Arviat (in advance) for being the home to what will be an important component and step in Inuit-led education.

The decision of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami Board of Directors to select Arviat as the home of the main campus was officially announced on February 11, 2026, by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI). I cannot overstate the importance of this announcement and what the future University will mean to Nunavut.

Inuit-led post-secondary education will mean that our future generations of leaders will have access to an education on our land. That education will be grounded in Inuit teaching and based on our traditions, knowledge, history, culture and language.

Congratulations to Arviat and all those who call it home!
